Events at FGWS
By David
Many fun and interesting events have been happening at FGWS lately. My favorite two would have to be the Renaissance Fair and the hiking trips near the Camden House. They were educational while at the same time very entertaining.
When we had the Renaissance fair, four people came to the school to tell us about the middle ages and the Renaissance. They came with real bows, shields, swords, and armor for everyone to try out (except the swords of course). We learne many things including that many boys at age 12 were chosen to start training to be a squire. If they were sent into battle (which most were) many did not live to be twenty-five, while the average age for a woman was about 50.
Although it was raining when we had our hiking trips, they were really nice. We started off in Crystal Creek Ditch and walked that trail. We saw many different plants and trees, like Big Leaf Maple, Poison Oak, Black Oak, and Bleeding Heart, just to name a few of them. We also saw many Banana Slugs on our trail. The best part of that trail was you cross this bridge and you can look almost straight down and see all the plants, trees, and the creek.
We had lunch at the Camden House and went on a second hike near the Camden House. We went up to the site of an old mine and the stamping mill. It was raining harder now so we decided to call it a day and go back. On the way back our bus driver/custodian Mr. Painter caught a Gopher Snake and some of us gathered around it and had a picture taken of us.
I’ve known French Gulch to be a school that goes on many fun field trips and they haven’t disappointed. Whether it is a Ren. Fair, kayaking, hiking trips, or whatever it, it is sure to be a great experience.

At French Gulch School By: Miura
At French Gulch School, the students are involved in many glorious activities, such as, karate, our garden, and field trips to the sundial bridge, Chevy’s and the city hall.
Every Thursday the students put on their belt and go to the cafeteria to wait for the karate teacher. Mr. Halsey. We’ve learned all types of defensive moves such as the sword and hammer, capturing twigs, checking the storm, sword of destruction, mace of aggression, and other defensive moves.
You increase your belt by learning these moves and the more you learn the more stripes you get and the more likely you are to get a chance to increase your belt. I have only been at this school for half of the year not two or three or four years so I only have a white belt.
The Garden was a small fenced in area that was really weedy and dry; the soil was clay and it was hard to get anything to grow. The flower beds were hoed and de-weeded, weed block was placed, wood chips were laid and a lot of native plants were planted and are now thriving. A green house that is still in progress is being made for fast growth out of P.V.C by the 7th and 8th graders. The whole school made stepping stones that are to be placed in the garden, I made a sign for the garden, and irrigation was planted. After all our effort our garden looks pretty good.
Santiago Calatrava is a great architect who created the Sundial Bridge in Redding, California. A great thing about being in a small school is that it is easier to take the whole school to places like the sundial bridge. We explored the sundial bridge and got to experience the great architecture. We ate lunch on the bridge then made our descent over to Chevy’s to tour the building and look at the tortilla machine and many other cool things.
After lunch we got back on the bus and went to the City Halls sculpture park. We toured the City Hall and sat down to draw the great sculptures.
Those are just small examples of what we have been doing at French Gulch School.
What We Did This Year
By: Cynthia Raines
This year we had Music, Dance, and Karate, and Japanese, program. We went to Chevy’s, Sundial Bridge, the Redding City Hall Coldwell Park, tree planting (at Highland Ridge Road), and Clear Creek Watershed.
Music is taught by Mrs. Frost and Mr. Heims. Our musical instruments include the recorder, mandolin, boom whackers, guitar, and a bass.
Dance is taught by Mrs. Christine Kingsbury. Mrs. Kingsbury has been teaching for about 4 years.
Karate is taught by Mr. Scott Halsey. He helps us go from one belt to the next and to defend ourselves.
Our Japanese her name is Kyoko. The students appear to like their Japanese teacher. 30 years ago she went to collage in the U.S.A. then she went to Japan. Now she is back and is teaching us how to write and read Japanese.
At Chevy’s the tour was really good. We saw them cut dough into little round circles.
We went to the Sundial Bridge and hiked a about a mile. We saw a turtle in the turtle pond.
We ate Lunch at Coldwell Park. Then we got into a line to hit the Piñata.
At the Redding City Hall we climbed 3 sets of stares to look at art work, we also passed the Mayors Office.
We went to Highland Ridge Road to plant seedlings. Then we ate lunch looking at the school.

The day we went tree planting
Breanna Jarrell
June 2, 2006
The day we went tree planting we left in Mr. Heims and Judy’s car and went up highlands. Later when we got up there, we had to drive even more. Soon we got there. We listened to Jan. She was the person who was showing us to use the hoe-dad and then we planted 100 trees.
When we where planting trees, we got to choose if we wanted a tree to take home or not. When we were done, we got in our cars and went to anther place to eat lunch. Soon we left and went down the hill. Then we were at school.
